Buying a new-build property in Spain is a great time to think about solar panels. With a new-build property, you can ensure from the very beginning that the solar installation is properly matched to the property, your electricity consumption and the available space.

But what exactly should you consider?

1. Check whether solar panels are already included

With some new-build properties, solar panels are already part of the construction project. It is therefore important to check exactly what is included in the purchase price. Are the panels actually included with the property? Or is only the preparation for a solar installation provided? Also ask how many panels will be installed, what the total capacity of the system is and which type of inverter will be used. Check whether this setup actually matches your consumption profile.

2. Look at the orientation and the roof

The orientation and available roof space have a significant influence on the eventual energy yield. A south-facing roof is not the only good option; east- and west-facing roofs can also be very suitable in Spain.

With a new-build property, it is important to consider potential shading from neighbouring properties, chimneys, technical installations or future construction.

3. Think about your future energy consumption

A new-build property can have quite a lot of electrical equipment. Think, for example, of air conditioning, a swimming pool pump, an electric boiler, an induction hob and possibly an electric car. Therefore, don't just look at your current electricity consumption, but also consider your expected future consumption. This helps prevent the installation from being undersized.

4. Check the electrical installation

With a new-build property, the electrical installation needs to be suitable for the planned solar panels. The electrical distribution board and connection to the electricity grid also play a role.

An installer can assess which system is technically possible and whether any adjustments are required.

5. Ask about legalisation

Even with a new-build property, the solar installation must be correctly registered and legalised. Therefore, ask who is responsible for the required documentation and procedures. The installation can be planned from the beginning to suit the roof, electrical system and expected energy consumption. This allows you to take factors such as the position of the panels, cable routes and the location of the inverter into account.
